Carpenter wasn’t interested in directing Halloween II as he had “made that film once” and “really didn’t want to do it again”, but still served as co-writer and co-producer. Carpenter has said the story didn’t turn out as he expected and has even called Halloween II an “ abomination and a horrible movie ”

Fun fact: the Pentagon has emergency plans for every situation imaginable - from alien invasions to zombie apocalypses. How accurate they are is...hard to determine (seeing as either is highly unlikely to ever happen), but they do have them, and a whole department dedicated to writing them up.

The remote grappling thingies came out of the nuclear industry. Because distance is the best radiation protection, you couldn't use glove boxes on high radioactive material, hence you needed remote controlled robot arms.

In the OR scene, you see a tall guy with a reddish beard sitting down in the prep room, behind the glass, at the right edge of the frame. That's novel author Michael Crichton's cameo. He's sitting down because he was freakishly tall (6'9''), and Wise couldn't keep him in frame if he had been standing.

In the novel, Michael Crichton added a full scientific literature bibliography. It looked frighteningly real and included some of the principal characters as authors. Robert Wise, the director, actually tried to look some of them up and found out that all the references were made up.

Funny how subservient and adorable JOI is until she's gone and then presented laughably as an non-unique giant advertisement with demonic black eyes. In other words, 'you're better off without that phony woman, the one you gave freedom to w/ a new emitter, the one you can shut up the instant a call comes in.' Who would take the eyes out of the promo model of their beautiful slave woman? Even if the writers and director were aiming at the opposite, I just think this is a movie that hates women, but what do I know?

  • @radwolf76

This was among the first Michael Crichton novels to get adapted to to the screen, and the screenplay is so faithful to the novel, that there's only one single line that stands out to me as being added, even with one of the characters being gender flipped from the book. The line was also added *because* of one of the characters being gender flipped from the book, as it's Leavitt's joke about being in a brothel that she uses to direct attention away from her aversion to flashing red lights. Also, if I had a nickle for every time a Michael Crichton Novel/Movie had horrific plot turns directly caused by a character's epilepsy, I'd have two nickles, which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice. (The other one being The Terminal Man.) Since Michael was a former medical professional, I'd like to think he was just trying to raise awareness of the condition, but its portrayal in his works was fairly stigmatizing. After Crichton's death, a sequel novel by another author was published with the blessing of his estate. The Andromeda Evolution reads much like the first one did and is a logical progression from the first story, with some good worldbuilding centered around the concepts and themes of the original.

The Andromeda Strain was Michael Crichton's first book. He wrote it while in medical school because he hated it. I saw this movie at a double feature drive-in movie that had this movie first, followed by Airport. I think I was 10 years old then.

Funny, there are so many versions of this movie out there with corrected this and corrected that, but none of them correct the simplest thing, the date. Just change the 0 to a 1 or the 1 to an 8 and it's instantly more believable than 2019.

More fun facts about Michael Crichton. The Andromeda Strain was the first novel under his own name and the sixth overall novel. The previous five were written under the name John Lange. Michael is also the only one ever to have the #1 book, #1 movie and #1 TV show simultaneously. And he did it twice. He wrote the books to pay for medical school. When students wanted to skip class, they usually told the teacher a relative died. but Michael decided he was going to tell the truth. A novel of his was being made into a movie and he had to go help with the screenplay. So that's what he told his teacher. His teacher thought _that_ was a lie and looked at him like, why couldn't you just say a relative died like everyone else? Also just released is the novel Eruption (no relation to Eddie Van Halen) which was started by Chrichton and finished by James Patterson.
